Tarun Tahiliani is one of India’s most influential contemporary fashion designers, known for redefining Indian couture through a distinctive fusion of traditional craftsmanship, modern silhouettes and fluid draping. Born in Bombay in 1962, he studied at The Doon School and St. Stephen’s College before earning an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. In 1987, he co-founded Ensemble with his wife, Sailaja Tahiliani, pioneering India’s luxury multi-designer retail landscape. He later trained at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and established his eponymous design studio in 1995.
A founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India, Tahiliani has played a defining role in shaping modern Indian fashion. In 2003, he became the first Indian designer to showcase at Milan Fashion Week, followed by presentations and showcases across New York, London, Tokyo, Dubai, Singapore and Karachi. His work is rooted in India’s textile and artisanal heritage, translated through engineered drapes, intricate handcraft and contemporary construction. Today, his Gurugram atelier brings together a large team of designers and master craftsmen, continuing his vision of an “India Modern” that connects cultural identity with a global fashion language.
